Book Review | Monsters love Underpants

Monsters love Underpants is written by Claire Freedman and illustrated by Ben Cort.

The pants are back, this time with spiky-toothed monsters sporting them...

This is the 7th book in the series, we've had aliens, dinosaurs, pirates, and Father Christmas.  I love these stories, nearly as much as the children!  So much so that last Christmas we based our half termly Story Cafe on "Aliens love Panta Claus". where children and families enjoyed making aliens and hanging pants on a little Christmas Tree.

I read Monsters love Underpants with a small group of 2-3 year olds.  They loved it...  We really enjoyed spotting all the different patterns on the pants, so I asked questions like "Can you find the pirate pants?" or "Can you see some stripy pants?".  The children spot funny little things on the pages as I read the story such as the spiders and bats hiding on the dungeon page, the alien spaceship in the sky, and the toys under the little boy's bed.

The rhyming text is great as usual, and these stories are just long enough to grab the attention of even the youngest children.  If you are reading this with children aged 0-5 years, here are some Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) links -

  • Literacy (reading) - enjoys rhyming and rhythmic activities
  • Mathematics (shape, space and measure) - notices simple shapes and patterns in pictures

We love Underpants stories!
