Ladybird books and Pink Lining Competition
I grew up with Ladybird books. I had some for learning to read, some for
doing maths, fact books about coal miners and electricity, books about things
to make and do, and loads of fairy stories. I love the old ones - the covers
are beautifully illustrated. The one I most remember is “The Princess and the
Pea”; the cover had a picture of the great pile of mattresses that the princess
slept on. And the one called “Things to
make” which required an unlimited supply of toilet rolls. And - I would never allow this now - my copy
of “Addition made easy” has writing
in it!

Pink Lining is inviting parents to tell them what their favourite bedtime book
to read to their child is, along with a brief synopsis and why they love it by
Monday, 16th December. Pink Lining will hand-pick nine lucky competition winners
who will each receive a beautiful Pink Lining Child’s Picture Satchel Bag (www.pinklining.com/uk/pl-child/picture-satchel)
and a fantastic Ladybird book, which they will be asked to write a short review
of to feature on the brand new Pink Lining blog, PL Pinboard (www.pinklining.com/uk).
So what do I read to my children at bedtime? Well, they are 12 and 14 now, however when
they were younger we read anything and everything but our favourites were “The
Very Hungry Caterpillar”, “The Gruffalo”, the Katie Morag stories, “Dig Dig
Digging” and “The Man on the Moon”. Then
we moved on to a chapter of a novel every night - we loved “Journey to the Centre of the Earth” and “Treasure Island” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”.

ReplyDeleteI am a secondary school teacher with a daughter in Year 6. As I sit and type this I am watching a programme on BBC 4 all about Ladybird Books. I also grew up with them and I looked through a selection in an Antique shop yesterday. I loved them and still do. My daughter has some of the more recent ones but the illustrations are not the same. However, we have been able to find some original versions and we shall not be getting rid of them any time soon. It is a pity that the books I grew up with have since been thrown out (not by me). Loved reading your post which I found via Google.

Thanks for your lovely comment Indigo Blue! I caught the end of the BBC4 programme last night and will watch it properly over the holiday. I'm lucky my Mum kept all our books so I still have lots of the old ones. A Merry Christmas to you too!
