We shared the story on the carpet - props included the book, and an original soft toy Elmer (it was given to my daughter when she was born).
We put a selection of wooden jungle animals on the tuff spot with leaves, pine cones and magnifying glasses for the children to explore.
All the children and families went off to get arty with Elmer-inspired resources.
We put out - grey playdough, Elmer pictures to make stick puppets, elephant cut out shapes and multi-coloured tissue paper, Elmer colouring pictures and various other open-ended resources such as grey paper, pens, crayons, scissors and glue.
As usual there were snacks and drinks, and we finished off by reading Elmer's New Friend - the children loved the ending where Elmer's New Friend is revealed - it's a mirror - YOU are Elmer's New Friend!! And we sang Old MacDonald Had a Jungle - with signs for elephant, giraffe and hippo.
Here's David McKee telling the story of how Elmer came to be - on the 25th Anniversary of the book in 2014.
