A Story Cafe | Jack and the Beanstalk

Today's story was Jack and the Beanstalk.  I was inspired to share this story because the Panto in Norwich this year has been Jack and the Beanstalk, and because I wanted to share a traditional tale.  This version by Nick Sharratt contains his trademark, eye-catching, cartoon-like drawings, along with rhyming text, and flaps to lift to add another dimension to the story.
We read the story using props.  The children joined in adding sticky-note leaves to the giant paper beanstalk as the beanstalk grew in the story.

Children were able to play with story-related items on the tuff spot, using their imagination to tell their own stories about Jack, his Mum, the beanstalk and the Giant.  I put out duplo bricks, laminated leaves and a giant green paper beanstalk stem.

Families then picked a paper bag and lots of different items from the table to make some of their own story props to take home.  We planted beans to grow at home, made beanstalks with paper and sticky-note leaves, we made castles at the top of a beanstalk and made some magic beans from cardboard in a little envelope (I used dinner money envelopes for the seed packets, recycled cereal packets for the card, clear plastic half pint glasses for growing the beans in with kitchen roll, we soaked the beans first overnight)

Here are some of the things we made -

After teas and coffees and biscuits and beans (well they were mangetout peas but near enough) and grapes we all came back together on the carpet to share Jasper's Beanstalk by Mick Inkpen.  You can watch / listen to this story on YouTube here.

Here are our prizes - I collect cheap, but quality picture books from charity shops or donations from local families and every child who comes along gets to go home with a picture book.

The children all left happy with a free picture book, a certificate and a family challenge.  For more Jack and the Beanstalk inspiration see my post here.
