This time at Story Café we shared the classic Handa's Surprise by Eileen Browne. Story Cafe is where we invite families along to a stay and play session to share a story, and learn a bit about their children's communication and language development. We share a healthy snack together, sing some songs, and give every child a picture book to take home.
Handa's Surprise is a story about a little girl called Handa who is walking to the next village to visit her friend Akeyo with a basket of delicious fruits. The animals she passes along the way each steal one fruit, until she reaches Akeyo's village with a basket of fruits that surprise them both.
I borrowed the Handa's Surprise story sack from the local library this time, not knowing what I'd get. But look at this, a great Handa doll with a basket of fruit that she can carry on her head.
The children loved trying to carry the basket on their heads without dropping any fruit and we had a lot of laughs. We explored the animals in the story.
And the different fruits. And we tried mango, banana and tangerines for our snack.
And we had a go with the scissors to make a little Handa stick puppet to take home.
We finished off with some songs and rhymes and everyone went home with a free picture book, with two lucky children's names drawn out of the hat to win a copy of Handa's surprise.
