This was a fabulous choice. It meant we could look at creativity. Usually at Story Cafe we "make something from the story", but with The Dot, we could just get creative. We shared the story on the carpet - props included the book, an old picture frame (I added a bulldog clip to the top so I could instantly frame my "art"), paper and a pen. When we got to the bit where Vashti draws her first "dot", I drew my dot and then instantly framed it just like the teacher in the book.
We had some fun with the frame later - lots of the children wanted to be photographed "in the frame".
I covered all the tables with lining paper and put out pots of paint and glue, paper, tissue circles, paint brushes and various circle shaped lids for printing with and lots of other open-ended art materials. I also put out some A4 sheets with frames printed on them.
Here are some of the wonderful pieces of art the children created...
As usual there were snacks and drinks, and we finished off by reading the story again, reinforcing the message about fostering children's creativity and imagination.
If we had the space, I'd love to be able to display all the children's art just like in the story...

Vygotsky said "It must not be forgotten that the basic law of children’s creativity is that its value lies not in its results, not in the product of creation, but in the process itself. It is not important what children create, but that they do create, that they exercise and implement their creative imagination."
We all need to remember this in our work with young children.
